The Long Beach Society of Engineers Architects and Scientists (LBSEAS) is an on-line community of technical professionals who live in, work in or enjoy the recreational benefits of Long Beach, California and who are interested and willing to contribute their technical expertise to ensure that the city of Long Beach has independent information and analysis of major (and minor) issues that affect the quality of life in the city.
Like many cities in southern California, Long Beach has a long history of political activism, and community involvement. Much of that effort has focused on traditional mechanisms for involvement, including community government, neighborhood councils, advisory boards, etc. However, until now there has not been a clearinghouse for analysis and commentary on the science and engineering aspects of challenging issues facing the community.
Examples currently in the news are many, but a short list in 2009 would include creation of wetlands near the coast, the idea that water quality could be improved by removing the breakwater, the relative air quality improvement that could be expected by cleaner truck emissions in the port, etc.
Our goal is to provide a moderated forum (no flame wars) access to diverse sets of expertise and an opportunity to ensure that public decisions are made with the best set of data possible.
